Cincinnati had hosted two previous National Football League (NFL) teams as well as one in the second and third circuits to be known as the American Football League, before the fourth league to use that name granted the city an expansion franchise for the 1968 season. As a result of a merger agreement between the two leagues, Cincinnati joined the NFL in 1970.
